Community Discussion

I'm really excited to see that we already have some members, and hopefully we'll continue to grow! Feel free to tell your friends about this community. Larger membership will mean greater diversity in perspective, which can only help to enrich the community.

astraevirgo and I have a bunch of ideas in the works for posts to make, including a listing of "wanted" posts that members can volunteer to put together. Also, if you have ideas or suggestions please let us know!

This seems like a great time to have our first community discussion. It will give us a chance to find out where to direct our energies and hopefully generate some new ideas.

What factors do you consider when deciding to back a candidate? *AND* What issues are important to you in the upcoming election?

What factors do you consider when deciding to back a candidate?
Usually I consider both the candidate's personal platform and also the official platform of their party. In the past I have placed importance on reproductive rights, health care, and education. I also tend to consider how articulate the candidate is in expressing their positions and opinions.

What issues are important to you in the upcoming election?
As always, I am interested in reproductive rights, health care and education. I have also developed a greater interest in foreign and military policy. Issues such as environmental policy and stem cell research are also on my list.

I feel like there's more, but I can't think of it at the moment.
What factors do you consider when deciding to back a candidate?
I don't trust anyone who isn't smarter than I am to run the country, so I look for a candidate who could kick my ass in chess & Trivial Pursuit. Ok, so that's not entirely serious, however I do think that a candidate's intelligence (proven through more than just a degree or an endorsement) is the one of the most important factors. I also look for a candidate who represents my view points, obviously, which I usually find within the democratic party. However, I'm kind of an old school democrat and have a hard time getting my viewpoints to mesh with the current democratic attitudes. Or something. Oh, and I'd like to look for a candidate who isn't heavily influenced by religion.

What issues are important to you in the upcoming election?
Foreign & Military Policy (GTFO of Iraq, plz). Domestic policies that support the lower classes and senior citizens (social welfare programs). Equal rights for all people, regardless of sexual orientation.
What factors do you consider when deciding to back a candidate?
I like to like a candidate. I want them to be a good speaker, and to be good with interacting with people. Shallow things, but if I'm going to listen to them speak for the next four years, especially on the State of the Union, I want to enjoy it. It goes without saying that I weigh the issues, but I'm never sure what's most important to me, so that's part of why this community will be good.

What issues are important to you in the upcoming election?
The War, and separate from the war, Military Policy. Social policy, of all kinds (Welfare, Social Security, Birth Control). Feminist issues (Birth control/abortion, family policies.) I want to know about everything...

Here's a short version.

What factors do you consider when deciding to back a candidate?
I'd like a candidate who is honest. "Yes, I was in my 20's and smoked pot. I stole candy bars as a kind." I also want to see them talk about something other than the top 2 or 3 issues; ie the war, social security, lowering taxes. Everyone promises to lower taxes. I'd like a candidate who is honest about this. "I'm not going to look into JUST lowering taxes, there's more to it than that. I make no promises, I make the effort to put the money to good use." Stuff like that. I'd like to hear about what they're going to do on a national level about education. Working towards a less expensive education after high school.

What issues are important to you in the upcoming election?
I'd really like to see a reform to the welfare and family aid programs. Speaking as someone who came from those programs I know what it means to get that aid. I also know that when trying to better yourself, it can bite you in the ass. They start to take away your benefits as you make more money, which I agree should happen, but they take too much away too quickly. I care about the war, but I know enough to know, I don’t have all the information and those decisions are left to people who are more informed. It’s important, but it’s not all I want to hear about for the next two years, there are other things going on that need attention as well.
